Early Years

Early Years Curriculum

The Nursery School accepts boys and girls from the age of 2 years 9 months and has a staff ratio of one adult to eight children. In the Nursery children learn to play constructively and co-operatively as they are encouraged to take part in a variety of activities. There are plenty of opportunities for physical play in the outdoor play area. At the appropriate time, the children spend a greater proportion of the day in Pre-Prep where they receive a thorough grounding in the basics of reading, writing and number work. Each child is encouraged to develop at his or her own pace, and small groups ensure much individual attention.

News from Early Years

This half term has got off to a very busy start with Early Years children making some wonderful fireworks pictures. There was paint flying in all directions when Pre Prep and Nursery children made splatter painting pictures and they also made some wonderful rockets. We also enjoyed a surprise story time with a recent visitor. Rehearsals are now well under way for the forthcoming Nativity productions and there are many budding actors and actresses hoping for an Oscar! The next few weeks will be filled with lots of activities focusing on Christmas with ever increasing excitement.

N&PP Harvest Lunch

14 Oct 2008 - 11:45am
14 Oct 2008 - 12:30pm

Nursery and Pre-Prep had a wonderful day celebrating Harvest this year. We started the day joining the Prep School in celebrating at the Harvest service. The children delighted in seeing all the produce displayed and watching the older children perform. The highlight of our day was welcoming many of the parents to our informal Harvest lunch. There were 30 children & approximately 25 parents and siblings celebrating together and it proved to be a delightful occasion. We had perfect weather, enabling us to all share lunch together with the children on the decking. The children behaved beautifully and really enjoyed their extra special lunch consisting of a Ploughman’s, home made cakes and apples from the Sisters’ garden. Thank you for taking time to share in our special day.

Creative Colours Afternoon

22 Oct 2008 - 1:30pm
22 Oct 2008 - 3:00pm

Today the early years department made the most of the Autumn sunshine and joined together for an afternoon of creativity and fun based around the theme of colours. Children from each of the three classes were encouraged to participate in a range of activities that enabled them to explore different colours and their properties, whilst investigating the effects of colour mixing. The children particularly enjoyed the outdoor activities which included welly boot painting and bottle swinging, whilst opportunities to do marble painting, make a colour wheel spinner and explore light and colour on the OHP were firm favourites amongst the indoor activities.

A marvelous afternoon was spent last Tuesday at our Early Years Fun Day when around 40 Nursery and Pre-Prep children delighted parents and siblings by showing off their sporting ability. The afternoon was a great success with everyone having fun. A circuit of five different activities took place for approximately six minutes per activity, culminating in group races. Afterwards around sixty parents and siblings joined the children and staff for tea and cakes outside. Thank you to everyone for attending and making the afternoon such a great success.

Pet Day

26 Jun 2008 - 9:30am
26 Jun 2008 - 3:15pm

A fantastic day was had by all Nursery & Pre Prep children at their recent Pet Day. Numerous dogs came to visit including a Rough Collie, a Golden Retriever, a Springer Spaniel, two beautiful cats, Rabbits, hamsters, chicks & even Ozzie, Charlotte Schryver's pony came to see us. Ozzie was amazing & stood perfectly whilst practically every child groomed him! The children were delighted with all the visiting animals & behaved impeccably throughout the day. A very big thank you to all the parents who brought in pets and helped to make this such a memorable occasion.
