Early Years Curriculum
Early YearsThe Nursery School accepts boys and girls from the age of 2 years 9 months and has a staff ratio of one adult to eight children. In the Nursery children learn to play constructively and co-operatively as they are encouraged to take part in a variety of activities. There are plenty of opportunities for physical play in the outdoor play area. At the appropriate time, the children spend a greater proportion of the day in Pre-Prep where they receive a thorough grounding in the basics of reading, writing and number work. Each child is encouraged to develop at his or her own pace, and small groups ensure much individual attention.
Preparatory School Curriculum
Prep

Alton Convent Prep's curriculum is about balance.
We seek to find the perfect balance between nurture and challenge. We are a warm, supportive learning community, in which the needs of all are addressed, in which each child's talents and abilities are given the opportunity to flourish, and where learning is fun. Our curriculum also seeks to challenge each child: providing new experiences, providing lessons which meet pupils where they are and then take them on to somewhere they wouldn't have reached otherwise, and providing academic, sporting or personal challenges, which encourage a sense of determination, perseverance and ultimately achievement. The nurture and support we provide enables and encourages our children to rise to these challenges.
Dear Parents,
Prep
It was a great pleasure to be able to present this year’s prefects, captains and the like with badges in assembly on Monday. My colleagues and I remarked on how mature the Year 6 children seem now, and how well they’ve grown into their roles of leading the school. I’m confident that Jack, Natalia and the rest of the team will be a great force for good throughout the school this year.
I’m also very pleased to note how well this term’s fixture programme is progressing, with children playing with enthusiasm and commitment in all the fixtures arranged against other schools, as well as playing in a great spirit of sportsmanship at the Inter-House Football Gala immediately before half term.
Prep School and House Officers
Year 6
Mrs Kirkham has now appointed children in Year 6 to their posts of special responsibility, and again this year all pupils have been given roles of their own, with the badges presented at assembly on Monday. Jack and Natalia become head boy and head girl, with Harry and Grace as their deputies. With the increased prominence of sport in the life of the school and a regular programme of inter-house competitions, each house now has two games captains as well as a house captain. News from Early Years
Early Years
This half term has got off to a very busy start with Early Years children making some wonderful fireworks pictures. There was paint flying in all directions when Pre Prep and Nursery children made splatter painting pictures and they also made some wonderful rockets. We also enjoyed a surprise story time with a recent visitor. Rehearsals are now well under way for the forthcoming Nativity productions and there are many budding actors and actresses hoping for an Oscar! The next few weeks will be filled with lots of activities focusing on Christmas with ever increasing excitement.
Poppy Appeal
Prep | SMCYear 6 pupils have been busy collecting donations for the Royal British Legion’s annual poppy appeal, with the Prep School’s stock of poppies dwindling to near zero as children throughout the school chose to wear their poppies with pride. Thank you to parents for supporting this appeal so positively. Many prep school pupils took part in acts of remembrance in their towns and churches on Sunday, with the whole school marking the 90th anniversary of Armistice Day on Tuesday with two minutes silence at 11:00 am. The atmosphere in the playground was particularly moving as children in Years 1
Y6 Woodland Walk
English | Year 6
On Wednesday 12th November, Year 6 went for a stroll in the school woods to look out for some amazing autumn flora and fauna. We used our senses to create poems and prayers about the autumn season. Everything was beautiful. The colours were absolutely gorgeous. There were flashes of ruby red, gleaming gold and rich deep browns. We used great adjectives to describe the crushing leaves and the rest of the scenery. Everything was utterly stunning and we would love to do it again.
Prep Inter House Football Tournament
Football | Key Stage 2
Although the weather was not promising in the morning, the school was on fire with anticipation for the House football Gala in the afternoon. There were two pools with each House having 2 teams consisting of all of Yr 6 and guests from Yr 5.
In the pool matches there were some glimpses of scintillating stuff on the pitches with some of the girls showing up the boys. One pool match had to go to golden goal between Augustine Cherries and Paul's Bananas. Excellent and brave goal keeping by Katya kept the Cherries at bay. However some excellent lead up work Rebecca and Zoe saw Josh slot the goal that mattered. In the other pool Natalia and Rebecca H of the Chantal Marshes kept all other teams at bay to reach the final; and what a final it was.
Prep School Tea Time Concert
Music | Prep
Musicians from the Upper Prep performed to an audience of parents, siblings, friends and teachers on Thursday 6th November in the first of this year’s Prep School concerts. The programme was wonderfully varied, with an excellent selection of short pieces. We began with a performance of Les Bouffons by the recorder ensemble, with the concert closing an hour later to The Drunken Sailor by the violin group. In between we’d heard many children perform, including both Maddy and Bryony on the harp, Katya on the cornet and Rachel’s Edelweiss on the trombone.
U11 Football vs Dunhurst
Football | Year 6The weather and pitch was poor. The team’s morale fair. Coach always grumpy and demanding. With these conditions how could the opposition fare against ACS. Alton started out in full command with Francesca having her shot squeezed passed the Dunhurst goalie. This was quickly followed by two further goals from Josh and Matthew. Solid defensive work by Harry “the Colonel” and Harry “Chippy” kept “Captain Jack” kicking leaves. Strong tackling, gaining possession and superb passing saw Alton with plenty of attacking moves. Sean White playing his first ever match played beyond his inexperience.
