International Rugby at Twickenham

|

Wearing an amazing array of wigs, hats, and face-paints and armed with flags, thirty children and four members of staff piled into the mini-buses on Saturday 14 November. Their destination was Twickenham to watch the England versus Argentina Rugby International.

Excitement was high as we pulled into the car-park, despite driving rain and swirling wind. Inside the stadium the weather didn’t seem so bad, however, and there was superb photo opportunity beside the famous pitch. The children behaved extremely well as they waited for the match to start and excitement built to a crescendo as the England team – including Johnny Wilkinson ran onto the pitch!

|
19 Nov 2009 - 7:00pm
19 Nov 2009 - 9:00pm

In order to raise funds for their upcoming journey to India, the Sixth Form girls organised a Quiz night. The event was a sell out and a buzz filled the air as the teams eagerly waited for the questions to begin. All ten rounds brought new challenges, stretching team member's brains to consolidate their answers.

Supper was provided in the form of a delicious Indian Curry which was served by the girls whilst items were displayed for the silent auction and raffle tickets continued to be purchased. The Music round was a highlight for many and an excellent chance for teams to scratch together extra points. As the quiz masters Tara  and Olivia  drew the evening to a close, there was delight sounded by all on the winning team Mumbai who had managed to work themselves into the lead in the final rounds.

" Is Society’s Obsession with Body Image Healthy?" - VI Form Conference

|
21 Oct 2009 - 9:00am
21 Oct 2009 - 4:00pm

It appears that the way the many people feel about their body image verges on the obsessional! There is little doubt that the culture and time in which we live determines how we all view body image - but are we as a society becoming more obsessed with ‘the body beautiful’? For many people the idea that they do not fit the ‘normal body’ image is very stressful.

These issues and many more were explored at Alton Convent Sixth Form Conference. More than ever women, and increasingly men, are feeling the squeeze, with the same enormous pressure, to achieve physical perfection. From compulsive weightlifting to steroid use, from hair styles to cosmetic surgery, growing numbers of men and women are taking the quest for perfect muscles, skin, and hair to new levels.

Young Film Critic of the Year

|

“When they opened the golden envelope and said my name, I couldn’t believe it.” Hannah Pusey’s last minute entry of a review of ‘Mamma Mia’ had taken her to Young Film Critic of the Year shortlist, thence to a ceremony at the BAFTA HQ and finally up onto the stage to receive her award!

Hannah, a Year 11 student, first learnt about the competition through a page in her homework planner, advertising National Schools Film Week. She promptly forgot all about it, and only entered just before midnight on the closing day.

High Ropes at More House

|
The Sixth Form kicked off their new year from the heights of More House High Wires. Putting fears behind them they worked well in teams to climb Jacobs's ladder and the Balancing Pole. Mr Maher led the way and showed the girls how to jump to the trapeze in style. Caitlin dominated the top of the Balancing Pole, challenging her team mates to make do with the bear minimum of space as she held on for dear life.

Four acrobatic girls made it to the top of Jacob's ladder and looked down beaming at their fantastic achievements.

Lower Sixth spend time in Bath & Bristol

|

On the 23rd June the lower sixth headed to the cities of Bath and Bristol for not only further education purposes but for some "culturally enriching" experiences including a trip to Thermae Bath Spa and the original Roman Baths. After a long journey by minibus which passsed quite quickly due to the amount of singing going on we reached Bristol and headed to what was an excellent open air theatre performance of "A midsummer's Nights Dream".

An early start on Wedesday meant we were first in the queue for the "Bansky versus Bristol Museum" exhibition, where we all saw a new perspectiveon graffiti art.

Girls go to the Races

|

The girls of the sixth form took an evening at the races, taking the opportunity to dress up and study the form. Set on top of the Sussex Downs, Goodwood is not only a breathtaking backdrop for the very finest flat racing, but it also offers the girls the chance to socialise and relax after A2 and A/S examinations.

By kind permission of the event organisers the girls were allowed discounted entrance into the Richmond enclosure. During every race a new surge of energy was released, creating a buzz throughout the stands. Some of the upper sixth came home with a little less money in their purses whereas others in the group had great wins!

Charley Boorman - An evening of humour and compassion

|

“He’s just such a lovely man…” “What a smashing, easy going, ordinary yet far from ordinary individual …”

People were describing a performer who at one stage nearly fell off the stage in his enthusiasm. That performer was no other than Charley Boorman, well known to everyone for his hugely successful television series and books, Long Way Round, Race to Dakar, Long Way Down and most recently, this time without his best friend Ewan McGregor, By Any Means.

Sixth Form head to Frensham wearing sensible footwear!

|

When the word Conservation was said to the sixth form there were mixed reviews. A group of girls that have become quite happy to lounge around and take it easy were sent into shock when ‘pond’ and ‘sensible footwear’ were said in the same sentence!

However as Wednesday afternoon finally loomed nearer a sense of excitement and energy was buzzing. When we actually arrived at Frensham we realised it was not digging a swamp but pulling up unwanted fir trees. We went in a line across the open space, stood there, we looked like we were on the starting blocks of a race, everyone rolled back their sleeves and pulled on their gloves, these girls were on a mission!
