Year 3
Year 3 Camp Fire and Sleepover
Residential | Year 3

On the 4th July Year 3 had a sleepover at school. When we arrived at 6.30 we unpacked our things and put out our beds in the Welsford Hall, some of them were really cool. We waited for our parents to go and when they had gone we went to the tennis court to play Miss McCallum’s new sport, called non-stop cricket. We were all rather hot and tired so we went for a barbeque and a drink. Lots of us had seconds of burgers or hot dogs and there were choc ices for dessert. After that we felt refreshed and we played Zulus on our way to the campfire. At the campfire we sang songs and toasted marshmallows. After that we got ready for bed and had hot chocolate. We had a story and went to bed at 11 o’clock! When we woke up we went to have breakfast in the Marian Hall and we watched a DVD until everybody was up. Mrs Bothwell taught us a great new game called Splat and then we went to the tennis courts to fly the kites that 3B had made. Before we went home we finished the game of non-stop cricket. It was a draw.
Y3 to Marwell Zoo
Biology | Year 3
As part of this term’s science programme on teeth and eating, Year 3 had a great day at Marwell Zoo on Monday. They learnt lots about how carnivore, omnivore and herbivore teeth are fitted to their function in a really interesting workshop session, before touring the zoo and meeting lots of animals. Particular favourites included the penguins and meerkats.
Alton First Holy Communion
Religious Studies | Year 3

On 8th June 2008 Lucy, Eleanor and I made our First Holy Communion. We all had a great time and the weather was sunny. All the First Holy Communion children, their families and close friends came to watch and celebrate us making our First Holy Communion. We have been having lessons since last September about the importance of receiving Holy Communion and the Lord’s life. Mrs Bothwell was there to lead the Choir and Mrs Bird and Mrs Matthews were Eucharistic Ministers. At the end there was a big cake and we all had a slice – it was delicious! As you can see from the picture the girls wore beautiful white dresses. The boys looked very smart in their red ties and sashes. The following Sunday we all get to dress up again to receive a certificate.
Y3 to Sainsburys
Science | Year 3

The whole of Year 3 went to Sainsburys Supermarket in Alton. We went there because in science we are learning about healthy eating. When we got there, Debby and Anne took us up the meeting room. We had to go through the warehouse to get up there! In the meeting room we tried six different fruits; they were mango, melon, strawberry, grape, pineapple and kiwi. My favourite was the red grape. The we went to see John at the meet counter and looked at the meat. After that we went to look at the fish. I held the fish: I stuck my finger in its mouth - its tongue felt like sandpaper! The we did a quiz and got to take a banana.
Under 9 Cricket v St Margaret's
Cricket | Year 3 | Year 4The team travelled to St Margaret's to play a limited over friendly match. All the boys had no previous experience of playing a competitive game. The team consisted of three Year 4 boys and five Year 3 boys. Ben lost the toss. St Maragert's came into bat and batted with confidence. It was obvious from the start that St Margaret's had a wealth of experience. After their alotted 16 overs, the opposition amassed 309 for the lost of 1 wicket gained by John. Alton showed great spirit in their fielding display. However, when Alton batted, St Margaret's bowled very well and limited Alton to 214 runs for 8 wickets. On paper Alton were beaten by a superior team. Yet the boys scored a victory of their own as they played as a team. They encouraged and were positive throughout the whole match and afterwards at the teams' tea time. I was so proud of their manners and team display. They were lead by Ben in such a gentlemanly fashion. Well done!
Good Shepherd Cake Making
Extra-curricular | Religious Studies | Year 3 | Year 5

My sister and I decided to make cakes for people around our village to raise money for the Good Shepherd Appeal. I thought this was a good idea because I love licking the bowl! Serena and I went round the village saying the cakes on offer were victoria sponge (with lots of jam) and chocolate biscuit cake (my favourite). We collected our orders and squeezed our four hens (Fave, Faberge, Feathers Magraw and Poudge) because we needed loads of eggs! Then we got cake making! One of my jobs was to be the human dishwasher! I licked the plates clean!
Good Shepherd Jewellery
Art & Design | Religious Studies | Year 3

For my Good Shepherd Appeal stall, I chose to make jewellery and place mats for people around my neighbourhood. I try my best for every single one and at the moment it is my hobby. Lots of people have bought things so I've been very busy. I've raises lots of money and the Good Shepherd Appeal does a lot of good work.

Y3 visit to Alton Library
English | Year 3
Earlier in the year, Year 3 pupils entered the Inner Wheel's competition to produce bookmarks in support of the RNIB’s talking books appeal, and thus it was that we found ourselves heading off to Alton’s excellent public library on Tuesday morning, to see an exhibition of all the entries and attend the prize presentation. Arriving a little early, we had chance to explore the children’s section of the library and it was lovely to see Year 3 settling down contentedly to read and share books. Alton’s Inner Wheel President, Mrs Pam Conway, said how impressed the judges had been by the standard of all the entries, and we were delighted that our own Maisie came 2nd overall, receiving Green Dragon vouchers as her prize.
Year 2 and 3 Activities Afternoon
Extra-curricular | Year 2 | Year 3
Following the success of last year’s Year 2 boys’ activity afternoon, we extended the scope of the afternoon this year to include both boys and girls in Years 2 and 3. Prep and Senior School staff laid on a varied programme of taster sessions for some of our co-curricular clubs, with Mr Carpenter running a Karate session, touch rugby from Mr Hoffman, art inside and out from Mr Heath and Mrs Davis respectively, drama with Mrs Hillier, and some creative ICT with Mr Berry. The children certainly seem
Y3 visit to RHS Wisley
Biology | Year 3Year 3 were blessed with near perfect weather for Monday’s visit to the Royal Horticultural Society’s gardens at Wisley. Strolling through the beautifully landscaped gardens we caught sight of snowdrops, crocuses and early daffodils as we made our way to the splendid new glasshouse where we spent much of the morning. We explored dry and moist temperate zones, looking carefully at the differences and similarities between the plants in these contrasting climates, as well as being overawed by the vibrancy of colour in the tropical zone, particularly from the many orchids on display. The root zone provided opportunities for hands-on interaction with the below the surface life of plants. Our walk back took in the wild woods and the rockery, before we settled down to our picnic lunch.
