Tug of War Competition in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support

On a bright autumn day at Alton Convent School teams of girls battled it out in a mammoth tug-of-war competition to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Relief. As the unseasonable sunshine poured down, House Teams of ten-a-side strove to defeat their rivals in front of vociferous and partisan support. Later in the day the Sixth Form and teachers' teams joined in the fun, and though the competitive element was high, the overriding atmosphere was one of an entire school banding together in support of a good cause.

Inter House Fashion Show

|

The Alton convent School Fashion Show 09 marked the start of new era in the history of the, House based, competitive event. As part of a new Creative Arts Day not only were the girls expected to create and present imaginative fashion designs but also to incorporate their designs within a 5-10 minute multi-media performance combining all the Creative Arts including Drama, Dance, Art and Design and Music.

Each House had to create a range of hats and a fashion show performance inspired by a different painting, with artists ranging from Jackson Pollock to Claude Monet. The results were truly outstanding and all Houses used video, dance and lighting to dramatic effect with St Johns winning 1st place. Over all it was a stunning demonstration and celebration of the girl's technical and creative abilities. Well done.

14 Oct 2009 - 4:10pm
14 Oct 2009 - 5:30pm

U15s

This team was hugely dominant from the start and Perins did not get a look in. Alton's passing, teamwork and shooting was exceptional resulting in a fantastic win of 25 – 4. Player of the match – Fiona

U16s

This team struggled initially to find their rhythm allowing Perins to go five goals up. Once Alton got going they were then matching Perins with their scoring but could not make the deficit up. An unfortunate loss of 5 – 13.

Player of the Match – Rosie

Literary Day

|

Elegance and grace came to Alton Convent School on the 23 June when the senior school's Literary Day celebrated the life, works and times of Jane Austen. Activities  ranged from a Dance with Emma Woodhouse to Wickham's World with girls route marched through the library and drilled, before being treated to a Regency Punch and Judy show.

Mrs Isabel Walker, who organised the day, felt that it had achieved its aim of presenting Hampshire's most famous author to girls in years 7, 8 and 9 in a way that was both fun and accessible. Alice in year 9 said, 'I really liked Mrs Bennet's marriage game because it challenged you to test your knowledge of Jane Austen and made you more aware of the dilemmas facing women in the Regency times and the unpredictability of marital success.'
