The Sixth Form
Sixth Form

Dear Student,
Why choose Alton Convent Sixth Form? The simplest answer I can offer you is: Because it has been designed specifically for you.
We listened to the ideas of students and what they wanted, so we have a wide choice of AS/A Level subjects, and an extra-curricular programme to cater for each individual - both on and off site. Purpose built accommodation, away from the main building, was considered important to give our sixth formers a sense of individuality and privacy. The transition into the Sixth Form here will be a natural progression. You will know your friends and your teachers – and they will know you and your potential. No time will be lost in getting to know new systems and new people. There will be pastoral support and we will work with you to develop your individuality and independence. You will be prepared for the next step into Higher Education or vocational training.
A2 Recital
Music | Upper VI

On Thursday 4 March two A Level music pupils, Kate and Olivia gave their final recital performances in front of a small but appreciative audience of family, friends and teachers. The wonderful acoustics and architecture of St Lawrence's church in Alton provided a perfect ambience for the girls' performances and the audience was treated to a wide range of vocal repertoire.
Both girls will be furthering their musical studies next year and we will be following their progress with keen interest!
" Is Society’s Obsession with Body Image Healthy?" - VI Form Conference
Extra-curricular | Sixth Form

It appears that the way the many people feel about their body image verges on the obsessional! There is little doubt that the culture and time in which we live determines how we all view body image - but are we as a society becoming more obsessed with ‘the body beautiful’? For many people the idea that they do not fit the ‘normal body’ image is very stressful.
These issues and many more were explored at Alton Convent Sixth Form Conference. More than ever women, and increasingly men, are feeling the squeeze, with the same enormous pressure, to achieve physical perfection. From compulsive weightlifting to steroid use, from hair styles to cosmetic surgery, growing numbers of men and women are taking the quest for perfect muscles, skin, and hair to new levels.

A'level Success
Upper VI
As the darkening clouds rolled in and the first raindrops fell, the sunshine in the smiles of the students said it all. In spite of all the gloomy media coverage that there were more applicants for fewer university places, all Alton Convent students are off to first choice universities to pursue subjects including Medicine, Maths, English, History, Politics and Philosophy. Mrs Sue Kirkham, headmistress, was quick to praise not only the hard work of the girls but also the dedication and enthusiasm of the staff.
Lower Sixth spend time in Bath & Bristol
Extra-curricular | Lower VIOn the 23rd June the lower sixth headed to the cities of Bath and Bristol for not only further education purposes but for some "culturally enriching" experiences including a trip to Thermae Bath Spa and the original Roman Baths. After a long journey by minibus which passsed quite quickly due to the amount of singing going on we reached Bristol and headed to what was an excellent open air theatre performance of "A midsummer's Nights Dream".
An early start on Wedesday meant we were first in the queue for the "Bansky versus Bristol Museum" exhibition, where we all saw a new perspectiveon graffiti art.
Girls go to the Races
Extra-curricular | Sixth Form

The girls of the sixth form took an evening at the races, taking the opportunity to dress up and study the form. Set on top of the Sussex Downs, Goodwood is not only a breathtaking backdrop for the very finest flat racing, but it also offers the girls the chance to socialise and relax after A2 and A/S examinations.
By kind permission of the event organisers the girls were allowed discounted entrance into the Richmond enclosure. During every race a new surge of energy was released, creating a buzz throughout the stands. Some of the upper sixth came home with a little less money in their purses whereas others in the group had great wins!
Lourdes: A Life Changing Experience
Lower VI | SMC

Year after year we had heard about the pilgrimage to Lourdes and how brilliant the experience was. This made us feel quite nervous leading up to the trip as we were worried we would not have the same experience and were quite sceptical that it wouldnt be "life changing".
Our primary aim whilst in Lourdes was to give those children who have mild or severe disabilities a break from their normal routine and at the same time providing some respite for their carers. We were assigned to help with children, which could be anything from pushing wheelchairs to face painting, organising parties, dancing, singing, and even a Sports Day! Though we were nervous and apprehensive in the beginning, seeing the joy on the smiling faces of the children really lifted our spirits.
VI Form Visit to New York
Residential | Sixth Form

We all know Frank Sinatra wanted "to be a part of it", but for four days in March that's exactly what a group of Sixth Form girls were - a part of "New York, New York".
The main focus of our visit was a conference on world issues at the United Nations, giving us the opportunity to broaden our views on topics such as Child Poverty in the 21st Century and Environmental Challenges. Chaired by Peter Luff, the conference included speakers from the Departments of Political and Economic & Social Affairs as well as the UN Environment Programme, all of whom gave us the chance to explore ideas and question our own beliefs through enlightening discussions.
