Sex Education
Senior School
Alton Convent School is a Catholic School which places great emphasis on the value placed on each human life. Sex education like all other aspects of the curriculum is taught within a clear ethical framework in which pupils are encouraged to make moral judgement having been exposed to biological facts. We undertake to give the full range of information about sexual relationships, contraception and sexually, transmitted diseases including HIV and AIDS. We also give the Church's position on these issues, not with a view to influencing our pupils, but in order to inform their moral choices.
Sex Education does not take place through the PSHE programme but through :-
- Biology lessons - physical, factual information
- Religious Studies - relationships and responsibilities
- English and Drama Lessons - debating the issues
Visitors are invited to lecture on appropriate aspects to support and enhance the work of teachers.
The School acknowledges that its young people are entitled to a responsible and relevant sex education.
Teaching staff will establish acceptable terminology and work to create a safe environment using a range of methodologies in order to encourage an open, non-defensive attitude to sex education. Discussions will be related to young people's own experiences and expectations of relationships, sex, sexuality and wider moral issues affecting their lives.
General aims will be as follows:-
- To provide biological facts and information
- To encourage the appreciation of stable family life
- To promote the responsibilities of parenthood
- To develop individual self-esteem and confidence
- To provide knowledge of relevant laws
Teaching is in small class groups
