The Listener's Curse
The traveller said his farewells to his wife
In the dusky dawn of day
And swore on coming back one night
As he slowly rode away.
The branches of the rustling trees waved
As he rode out of sight
And the moonbeams of night shone down
In the darkness of the night.
As he rode in search of the listener’s curse
The moonlight shone so dim
No sound save the plunging hooves
The listener’s curse rode with him.
After forty long days and nights had passed
He knew of what was true
The phantom listeners rode with him still
Still swooping in the blue.
“I swore on returning to you my love,
And cannot break my word
Or the curse will steal my soul forever
So please let me be heard.”
The phantom listeners sent the message
To the traveller’s loving one
He rode home with a burning heart
To his loving wife and son.
“Is anybody there?” he asked
Arriving at the house.
