Letter from the Headmistress - Summer Term 2003
The end of the summer term traditionally is a hectic round of sport, creative activity, picnics, curriculum days, school outings, catwalk show etc. It is filled with excitement and for those moving on to new challenges and even new schools, a little trepidation.
This year, however, all these events have been overshadowed by the loss to the School of its beloved founder, Sister Madeleine. Reverend Mother, or ‘Rev’ as she was affectionately known by many, is the reason we are all here. It was her vision, dynamism and doggedness which ensured the opening of Alton Convent School over 60 years ago. She was a woman of many parts as you will see from the tribute printed alongside this letter.
The Sisters and I would like to thank all of you for your kindness and support in the last two weeks. The whole school was touched by the many people who travelled long distances to attend the funeral and the cards received from past pupils, staff and parents. It truly emphasised the community nature of our school and what a privilege it was to be chosen to follow in the footsteps of such a formidable woman.
The Newsheet (whether the Convent Herald or Voices) contains much detail of the activities of the School. I hope you will enjoy getting a glimpse of school life in the last term. Whatever the pupils have done, they have done to the very best of their ability. It is my pleasure and privilege to be headmistress of such a happy community. Thank you for your kindness and support. I wish you all a wonderful summer holiday, a time to recharge batteries, explore creatively, read voraciously and do all the things that you complain you have no time to do at other times of the year.
Mrs S.Kirkham
