Equal Opportunities
Whole school
Alton Convent School is committed to positive action to eliminate discrimination in accordance with Equal Opportunities legislation. It wishes to respect and accept the individual rights of each person/child without prejudice or discrimination.
Every employee is entitled to a working environment that promotes dignity and respect to all. No form of intimidation, bullying or harassment will be tolerated.
It seeks to implement good practice in all areas of its work.
Employment
We intend to ensure quality of opportunity so that no adult should be disadvantaged or discriminated against in seeking employment. All applicants will be considered on their ability and suitability for the post. All training is anti-racist, anti-sexist and anti-ageist in content and conduct.
Training, development and progression opportunities are available to all staff.
Curriculum
All children will be respected for their individuality and their potential recognised, valued and nurtured.
Lessons/activities and the use of equipment will offer opportunities for the children to develop in an environment free from prejudice and discrimination.
Opportunity will be given for the children to explore, acknowledge and value similarities and differences between themselves and others.
The curriculum, where appropriate, will include learning about the different environments and cultures of the world so developing the children's self-respect and respect for others.
Food
We will respect and will meet the dietary needs of any child/adult, especially emanating from medical or cultural needs/beliefs.
Discriminatory Behaviour/Remarks
Discriminatory remarks or behaviour will not be tolerated at anytime by anyone within or associated with the school or at any event organised by Alton Convent School.
No child, individual or family will be excluded from the school's activities on the grounds of age, gender, sexuality, class, family status, means, disability, colour, ethnic origin, culture, religion or belief, subject only to normal entry procedures.
Anti-Racism
We welcome the fact that our society is multi-cultural and multi-racial. We wish to promote an understanding of, and a commitment to, the principles of racial equality and justice. We welcome, respect, and value every child and family. We aim to provide an anti-racist environment and to meet the needs of ethnic minority groups and individuals, equally.
Anti-Sexism
We aim to provide equal opportunity for girls and boys, women and men. The effects of sexism impoverish both sexes by limiting horizons and restricting choices. We are committed to identify sexist practices, especially unconscious ones, and to formulate practical strategies for overcoming them.
Disability
We aim to promote equality of opportunity for children with special needs and for their parents/carers. Children and adults with disabilities and learning difficulties should have access to the same range of education, training and employment and the same choices and opportunities as their contemporaries. We recognise the benefits to be gained by both disabled and able-bodied adults and children from playing and learning together.
Our commitment is that all employees, whether part-time, full-time or temporary, will be treated fairly and with respect. Selection for employment, training or any other benefit will be on the basis of aptitude and ability. All employees will be helped and encouraged to develop their full potential and the talents and resources of the staff will be fully utilised to maximise the efficiency of the school.
We will review all our employment practices and procedures to ensure fairness.
Breaches of our equal opportunities policy will be regarded as misconduct and could lead to disciplinary proceedings.
