Careers
Alton Convent Sixth Form places a great deal of emphasis on helping individual students make the best possible choice for their futures. We have a wide range of careers material available in the Library and in the Sixth Form Centre. There is a dedicated computer system which provides the latest software and CD Roms for sixth form choices. We help each student to apply for the courses and programmes that reflect their specific abilities and aspirations.
Because we know all our students so well we are able to offer good advice and help to make sure they do not under estimate their abilities. We understand about pressure and the same measured management and support they have had at GCSE will be carried over to ensure success at A Level.
We strongly encourage our students to attend Careers and Higher Education Fairs and University Open Days, particularly during the Lower Sixth. Work experience is a vital part of the programme. Girls have worked in Advertising, Theatre, Microbiology Laboratories, Hospital, Solicitors, Summer Camps, Speech Therapy Departments, Business and Commerce, Banking, Architects, Magistrates’ Court, Estate Agents, Printing and Design. A lot of time and emphasis is given to the early completion of the UCAS application form. We give practical assistance with interviews, from specialist outsiders giving hints on technique.
We also hold a wealth of information on opportunities for taking a Gap Year or vocational training leading to a specific career. Our school has very successful links with the Independent Schools Careers Organisation. We encourage Sixth Form students to make full use of the careers experience courses run at many universities during the holidays.
