Key Stage 1 & 2 Policy
Key Stage 1 | Key Stage 2
The Key Stage 1 and 2 staff meet regularly to discuss children's progress, attainments and needs. Children's immediate needs and general progress are discussed daily.
Conduct
Children are encouraged to consider and respect others at all times. Punctuality and good manners are expected. Children are asked to walk while in school and to keep to the left in the corridors. They should stand aside for adults. Unacceptable behaviour: please refer to the school's discipline policy.
A children's code of conduct is displayed in classrooms.
Dress
All pupils are expected to wear the correct uniform, and to appear neatly dressed while travelling to and from school. They are encouraged to take care of their personal belongings and to respect those of others. By the end of Year 2 they are all expected to be able to cope with ties and shoe laces. Parents are requested to purchase sensible navy or black shoes for school. Black or white slip-on plimsolls are preferred for PE activities. Parents are requested to purchase school PE kit from the general office.
For safety reasons no jewellery may be worn for PE activities with the exception of stud earrings. Watches may be worn but should be marked with the child's initials or name. Pupils are encouraged to have tidy hair at all times. Girls, in particular, are asked to tie back long hair.
At the class teacher's discretion, children may be allowed to dispense with blazers in hot weather. A legionnaire's hat is available from Mrs Mylward via the General Office for use in the summer term during recreation and on the playing fields.
A uniform school bag is compulsory. Uniform PE bags, swimming bags and reading folders are obtainable from the General Office. PVC art overalls, while not compulsory are also available. All items of uniform must be clearly marked.
Health and Safety
All Year 1 and Year 2 pupils must be collected by a parent or carer at the school door, or by another adult previously notified to the school secretary or class teacher. Children will not be allowed to go to the car park with a junior sibling and only with a senior sibling by prior arrangement. Children in other Year groups may meet their parents in the school car park. Children not collected by 4pm will be taken to After School Care.
If a pupil is absent from school a letter of explanation is required.
Illnesses or accidents are dealt with initially by the school welfare officer who will recommend, where appropriate, contacting the parent, health centre or hospital. If medicines are sent into school they must be clearly labelled and handed to the class teacher or school secretary, who will pass them to the school Welfare Officer for safekeeping. The Welfare Officer will administer all medicines, but the class teacher may oversee the use of inhalers, providing written instructions have been supplied.
No child is allowed to go to the school playing field without an adult.
General
Homework is provided on a regular basis but always at the class teacher's discretion.
Children may, if they wish, bring one small toy to school for which we cannot accept responsibility. Similarly, if a child brings money to school it should be in a marked purse for which we cannot accept responsibility.
School uniform must be worn on school outings, in which all children are required to participate.
Children are not permitted glass bottles or fizzy drink cans in school, or on outings. They are allowed water. They are not allowed to purchase chocolate or items from the Holy shop without permission from the class teacher. The school at morning break will provide a fruit snack for all children in KS1. Water is available from drinking fountains or children may use their own water bottles. Children in KS2 are encouraged to bring in a healthy snack from home.
Physical Education
Physical education is considered an important part of the school curriculum. An emphasis is placed on helping children to improve and develop body control whilst learning the necessary skills which can be used in the team or individual games. Whilst it is essential that all children have the opportuntiy to participate in a variety of sports, team selection will depend upon ability and commitment. Parents are welcome to attend inter-school matches, tournaments, galas and sports day.
Children need the correct PE kit, which they must have available in school at all times.
Swimming
Swimming classes are run for ten week periods during every term. Our aim is to enable all children to learn to swim by the end of Year 3. Swimming is therefore compulsory for children in R-Y3.
If a child is well enough to attend school, he or she will be considered well enough to travel to the sports centre with their class. There will be no class teacher supervision in school during swimming sessions. When travelling to the sports centre children are expected to wear a coat or blazer and to use the coach seat belts.
