U11 Wessex League Football

The league began with an encouraging encounter against Meoncross. They always produce good honest sides and this was no exception. However they did come to Alton and found that our little side would not lie down. After Jack's mishap that let in Meoncross' first goal, Alton sent many a counter attack which brought robust defence from the opposition. Josh R was everywhere, both in atack and helping out our limited defence. However Josh P put in some some strong defensive tackles. Jack made some spectacular saves. However Meoncross kept the lead and won by the single goal. Just a footnote - Mr Russell told me he had 34 boys to choose from, which makes this result even more remarkable, don't you think!

Round 2 of the League saw us pitted against Mayville; the "ol' enemy" as someone said. Alton came out with much enthusiasm and determination not to be thrashed as in previous encounters. The Alton defence at times looked vunerable, as Mayville's skipper (on Portsmouth's books) showed class and purpose. However Josh R supplied the start Alton needed with a stunning free kit into the top left corner that raised his team's game and shocked Mayville. Matthew was everywhere in creating limited opportunities for Mayville to get into stride. He was assisted by Harry "Chomper" and Harry "the Colonel" . Francesca was battling hard to find holes in Mayville's defence. As always Skipper Josh was supporting play wherever it was needed. Alton did concede a soft goal through a handling error by Jack, yet he made some remarkable saves in the latter stages of the match. Harry"Chippy" has to have a mention as he is gaining good experience from these tough matches to develop match fitness and awareness. A potential setback for Mayville in the closing minutes of the game as the ball was rifled across the goal face by Francesca with goal and all defenders stranded; Matthew had to touch the ball into the net but alas..... The final score read 1-1; a just result.
Well done to the players for a excellent team effort.
