U9 Football vs Mayville
As we greeted Mayville again, Mr King of Mayville smiled and said "It's deja vous again!" Mr H. thought maybe not after yesterday's result. If the truth be known there was a question mark with selection as the majority of Alton's team were from Year 3, but by the end of the match all such thoughts were far gone. The beginning of the match however saw pressure "from the terraces" of comments such as sacking the manager and concentrating on netball if the result was poor.
The match was not poor however, with both sides attacking at every opportunity. Alton seemed to have the upper hand: they made numerous incursions into the penalty area, but could not find the back of the net. Captain "Ferocious" Francesca made mincemeat of the Mayville defence and James "Egg" complimented his captain with great support play. Charlie "Brutus", crashing through the mid field gave the opposition a sense that Alton were serious about this match. Mr King gave Alton the first chance for a goal as Francesca was held back from a promising raid. She duly converted the penalty giving Alton the lead. However, Alton riding on the scoring, fell asleep and Mayville equalised. This spurred Mayville on and raised their game. However, many promising attack were thwarted by diligent defending by Harry "GG" and the ever present Francesca. 1 all at half time.
The second saw Alton take control with Charlie, Boysie, Egg and Francesca totally dominating the midfield and constantly creating threats. Charlie, who gave his all, was replaced by Harry "Nugget", who in turn made his presence known with mixing into the fray. John, also a worthy replacement, showed his determination by making adecisive run on the left flank. Francecsa showed her class by slipping past two defenders, reaching the penalty area and releasing her lethal right foot with ball hitting the back lef hand corner of the net. A huge cheer was heard around Alton. More stout defending by "GG", Sam I-T and Boysie did not allow Mayville to pass and Mr Reliable Ben in goal made good saves as Alton's confidence grew. Another penalty saw Alton go to a 3-1 lead after Francesca scored from the spot.
As the whistle blew for fulltime, history was created as Alton recorded its first ever win against Mayville at home in front of an impressive crowd of 14. Well done to all 12 players. The Alton Convent Under 8/9 victorious football team was not "deja vous" after all, Mr King!
