U11 Football vs Mayville

|

The catch phrase for this final match of the season was "play with pride and passion". The Alton Convent team did just that with "Captain Commitment", Tom. Alton looked down the barrel of a gun against the League favourites Mayville. A quick reshuffle of personnel: with Ollie sick Henry became No.1 keeper and Tom moved to chief central defender. The match began with Mayville taking an early lead. Alton did not buckle and after a few minutes of robust defending by Tom and gallant goal keeping by Henry, Alton mounted their attacks by Francesca and Josh. Alton kept the pressure throughout the first half. Joel playing his typical terrier like role, snapping at the heels of the opposition. Mayville were not expecting this match to be tough, just a walk on the pitch to gain the League title. So they find themselves holding on to a very tender lead.

The second half started off like the first: Mayville broke through a defensive lapse by three Alton defenders leaving Henry no chance at stopping the goal. However, unlike in previous matches, Alton did not collapse with heads down. Jim Brooker came on to replace an under par Joe and held his own against more skilled players. He worked hard to try and clear a mis-kick only to watch the ball dribble over the Alton goal line in the dying moments of the match.

Mayville did finally secure the title, but they knew that Alton was not the push over they were accustom to. The Alton team played the best match all season and lost 3-0, yet they won respect from Mayville and their coach. Well done for finishing the season on a "winning" high and congratulations to Tom by being voted Player of the Match form both coaches.
