Pre-Prep - Autumn 2007

Within Pre Prep we aim for a holistic approach, and, therefore, the majority of our work is cross curricular. The first half term our topic is Rhymes. The topic will include nursery rhymes, as well as traditional rhymes, and number rhymes. After half term our topic will be Celebrations, and we will be learning about Divali, All Saints, Bonfire Night, Remembrance Day, St Nicholas Day, and Christmas. We are planning our yearly outing to Miller's Ark Animals at Roke Farm to take part in the re-enactment of the Nativity during December, and of course there will be the highlight of the term, the children's Nativity production! This is going to be a very busy term for the children, and we will cover all areas of the curriculum.

Personal and Social Development

Personal, Social and Emotional development will feature heavily as the children learn to adapt to the many changes, and responsibilities that moving to a new class brings. They will be encouraged to take on responsibility for themselves and their possessions, as well as becoming class helpers.

Communication, Language and Literacy

Language development covers a wide range of rhymes, stories, and poems, with the topic of Rhymes naturally involving the children in many traditional rhymes. The children will be encouraged as a group to participate in rhymes and poems, and will be introduced to Jolly Phonics initially through Jolly Phonics jingles.

Mathematical Development

Mathematical development will feature highly within the normal working day and is covered within the topic in numerous ways from group work to individual sessions, thereby covering the needs of the individual child.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

Knowledge & Understanding of the World will be looking at various investigations, experiments, and technology, including; gloop, making soap sculptures, building a wall for Humpty, and finding out if eggs really do break if they fall! We shall be planting bulbs, investigating leaves and, of course, we shall be celebrating Harvest, and looking at how some of our food is grown.

Physical Development

The children's physical development will be met on a daily basis through our regular afternoon excursions to the woods, and the adventure playground, always popular with the children regardless of the weather! The children will have weekly PE lessons where they will experience a variety of different apparatus, and weekly Music and Movement lessons. Weekly Pre School dance classes will continue on a Monday lead by Mrs Golborn.

Creative Development

Creative development will feature many new experiences for the children. They will be involved in creating the many different displays including group, as well as individual displays within the classrooms. They will experience using a wide variety of different media including pulp, mod rock, dough and various paint mixes. They will be making a vast array of creative masterpieces from sunflowers to Christmas trees. Cookery sessions will know doubt be the highlight of the week, and leave you free from the worry of what to produce for tea on a Friday evening, your sons and daughters will provide! Gourmet delights will include sandwiches, flapjacks, St Nicholas biscuits, cheese straws and apple crumble made by their own fair hands!

It is emphasised that the above is offered as a guide only, and the school retains the flexibility to adapt its schemes of work to the needs of the individual or the class.
