Year 4 - Summer 07

English

During the first half of the summer term, Year 4 will be focussing on preparation for their English Speaking Board (ESB) exam. English lessons will concentrate on reading aloud to an audience, reciting a learned poem and preparing/presenting a chosen topic. Simultaneously, Year 4 will be working together on choral poetry in preparation for the Festival of Arts. Emphasis will be on their use of expression in order to present the poem to a large audience.

In the latter half of the term, Year 4 will be taking a look at poetry, advertisements and persuasive writing. They will be creating their own advertisements and writing formal and informal letters on a range of themes.

Mathematics

Year 4 will begin this term by looking at area and volume, they will be taught how to determine the volume of a shape by knowing its dimensions and therefore work out the volume of a much larger shape. Pupils will have the opportunity to visually analyse particular repeating patterns and continue them through the use of reflection, symmetry and rotation. In addition from their data handling work in geography last term, pupils will be focusing on the use of pie charts. They will be learning about how they are used, why they are useful and how information can be interpreted from them. Our final topic this term will aim to develop the pupils' understanding of number patterns. This will incorporate much of the skills they have learnt this year such as recognition of the appropriate operation. Pupils will need to use their understanding of decimals in this topic as many of the number patterns will be based on the way these particular number behave.

Science

This term sees the beginning of two Life Processes topics for Year 4. At the start of this term, pupils will be studying Habitats. This will include the understanding of the seven characteristics of life, different types of habitat (both large and small) and how to group particular organisms using simple keys and diagrams. In addition to this they will also look at how understanding habitats can help us to protect other living things and the environment around us. This particular topic links well with a topic in PSHME that will be covered later in the term. Finally, the pupils will have the opportunity to study food chains and the effect they have on the planet as a whole as well as the effects in a particular local area.

History

History this term will focus primarily on the Tudors, continuing work from last term. At the beginning of this term, pupils will have the opportunity to study and discuss the changes that occurred as a result of Reformation in our country and how this continues to affect our lives today. The remainder of this half term will look at Henry VIII's children and the contribution they made to this particular period of history. The rest of the topic focuses on Tudor life in general. This will include the rise in exploration and what items we have today that were first discovered in the 16th century and living conditions, in which pupils will discover just how lucky they are to have a WC! This topic will also include a trip to Weald and Downland Open Air Museum, in which pupils will discover just how food was prepared and cooked in Tudor times along with an apothecary workshop: this promises to be a fun and informative day out.

Geography

This term Year 4 will be studying a Greek locality. They will begin by examining where Greece is using atlases and information. Pupils will study its climate and the foods that are therefore grown, about the Greek people as a community and about their culture (aside from their knowledge on Ancient Greece). They will also have the opportunity to study a specific town in Greece, Epidavros. Finally their work will culminate in the pupils producing a brochure about Greece which takes into account all the specific areas we have studied.

Religious Education

Pupils will be asked to reflect on their experiences of energy, specifically Fire and Wind; through this they will come to understand how the Holy Sprit gave the apostles courage and energy at Pentecost. They will also study and consider how rules allow us the freedom to live peacefully. They will also come to realise that it is everyone's responsibility to keep these rules, not only in school but in the wider community as well. Through this they will learn about the sacrament of Reconciliation. Finally we will think of places that are important to us and those connected with the life of Jesus in the Holy Land. They will also study the Hindu faith during this term.

French

We will be looking at food, in particular fruit and vegetables, and the children will be able to express their likes and dislikes. We will also take a closer look at holidays, focusing on clothing The lessons will be very practical with the children using a variety of games, songs and role play to help them learn the new vocabulary.

ICT

The children will learn about modelling effects. They will learn to provide accurate instructions for drawing simple shapes and, building on last term's work, to use spreadsheets to see how modelling actually works. This term the children will be working in pairs, deciding how best to use the software and working individually to create simple shapes. They will be learning how important it is to be able to edit and change instructions.

Personal, Social, Health and Moral Education

This term pupils will be looking at their neighbourhood, what things are important to them in their own neighbourhood and what they can do to ensure it remains an area in which a community can thrive. They will also link this with discussing the changing countryside. What effect people are having on our countryside and whether these changes a good thing or not. They will finally be looking at rubbish and how the increasingly fast lives we live are impacting on the environment. They will discuss what could be done to ensure the environment we live in is a safe and clean one.

Music

All children who sing in the choir will be given the opportunity to audition for Chanteurs in the second half of the term. In class we will prepare a selection of songs from The Sound of Music and Music Express Songbook from which they can choose an audition piece. Using their musical skills, they will create their own musical composition in groups based on the poem Seashore. Listening will include the story of the Love of Three Oranges by Prokofiev.

Drama

Year 4 will be working to develop their listening skills and the ability to use movement to express the mood and rhythm of music. They will also be using role-play and mime to develop their understanding of the Tudors which they are studying in history this term.

Physical Education

In the summer term the girls will be introduce to rounders. We will practise and develop the basic techniques of fielding, striking with a bat and bowling. They will build their confidence to improve their throwing, catching and aiming skills. We will also introduce the basic rules of the game to them. In games lessons we will play basic games and do activities to improve their ball handling and catching skills.

The boys will be reviewing their handling and throwing skills and then progress onto accuracy and distance throwing. Basic cricket skills such as stance, bowling action and fielding will be introduced. Athletics will focus on the development of the high jump and long jump, stride patterns and the continuation of arm and body positioning in the sprints and long distant running.

It is emphasised that the above is offered as a guide only, and the school retains the flexibility to adapt its schemes of work to the needs of the individual or the class.
