Year 3 - Summer 07

English

This term we will be considering a range of genres from poems to letters and adventure stories. The children will learn about pronouns and apostrophes and generally revise the punctuation they have learned throughout this year. The children will be writing recounts, poems and letters and considering what information is needed to make a good holiday brochure.

Mathematics

The children will continue to develop their understanding of the four rules of number, including the use of simple decimals and negative numbers. They will also be measuring area, mass, capacity and length. We will discuss the need for the different time zones around the world and start using the 24hour clock. Shapes with more than one line of symmetry will be explored and there will further work on recognising a right angle.

Science

Two topics will be covered this term: Helping Plants Grow Well and Teeth and Eating. The children will consider where most foodstuffs come from and grow their own seeds and observe and record their development. They will consider the function of different teeth and how to care for them.

History

The final topic for this year completes our study of Invaders and Settlers, looking at the reasons for the Viking invasion and the effects of the Viking way of life on Britain.

Geography

In the second half of the term we will be studying the development of building materials used for homes throughout history. We will also look at how plans inform us of room layouts and of rooms within a building. Finally we will look at some of the reasons why people move house.

Religious Education

By thinking about how our energy is used and renewed, the children will come to an understanding of how the Holy Spirit gave the apostles courage and energy at Pentecost. They will learn how rules can give us the freedom to live in peace. We will think about places that are important to us and places connected with the life of Jesus. They will also hear about Hinduism, as part of our awareness of other faiths.

French

We will be looking at members of their family, animals they might find on a farm and vocabulary relating to the seaside. The lessons will be very practical with the children using a variety of games and songs to help them learn the new vocabulary.

ICT

The children will discover that simulations are a useful learning tool when developing new skills, or understanding difficult concepts, such as the movement of the planets within the solar system. They will also learn the necessary skills to send and receive emails within the safe confines of a class account.

Personal, Social, Health and Moral Education

We will be discussing rules in secular life, why we need them and what our responsibilities are, touching briefly on how our laws are made. We will see how stealing and vandalism can affect people's happiness and safety, and look at the role of the police in an emergency. The needs of the disabled and the responsibility to treat them with equal respect will be considered.

Music

The children will learn many new songs including rounds and sea shanties. They will compose using ostinato (repeated pattern) accompaniments played on percussion instruments and recorders. More musical elements such as dynamics, tempo and texture will be used as a basis for their own musical composition. After working together as a class to add instrumentation to the story from Aesop's fable The Hare and the Tortoise, they will write their own stories and compose music to accompany them. They will listen to the Carnival of the Animals and explore sounds in Animal Magic.

Art and Design

In DT this term, the children will be encouraged to design and make model gardens based on given design criteria. They will be encouraged to select suitable materials, and choose appropriate techniques to build and assemble their designs creatively. They will use a storyboard to sequence and evaluate their ideas, comparing and adapting their methods and approaches. In art, the children will use sketches and first hand observation to explore colour, tone, line and shape through our topic on gardens. They will experience and compare a range of techniques, and famous works of art, before developing their own paintings and designs.

Drama

The children will continue to develop speaking and listening skills through simple genres such as freeze frame, hot seating and collective role-play. This term the drama work will be closely linked with the PHSME areas of focus and the children will be encouraged to share, listen to and value the ideas of their peers. The children will be encouraged to devise their own group pieces and to perform these to the rest of the class. We will begin to look at turning stories into play scripts for the children to follow.

Physical Education

In the summer term the girls will be introduce to rounders. We will practise and develop the basic techniques of fielding, striking with a bat and bowling. They will build their confidence to improve their throwing, catching and aiming skills. We will also introduce the basic rules of the game to them. In games lessons we will play basic games and do activities to improve their ball handling and catching skills.

The boys will be reviewing their handling and throwing skills and then progress onto accuracy and distance throwing. Basic cricket skills such as stance, bowling action and fielding will be introduced. Athletics will focus on the development of the high jump and long jump, stride patterns and the continuation of arm and body positioning in the sprints and long distant running.

It is emphasised that the above is offered as a guide only, and the school retains the flexibility to adapt its schemes of work to the needs of the individual or the class.
