Year 2 - Summer 07
English
This term, Year 2 will be looking at a range of fiction texts, including fairy tales and traditional stories. We will also look at the components on non-fiction books, including labelling, diagrams, captions, indexes and contents pages. Our phonic work this term will consolidate previous work on letter blends and high frequency words, and we will introduce suffixes and homophones. Grammar work will include sentence and punctuation revision. The children will be encouraged to use exclamation marks, speech marks and commas in their independent writing. We will continue to encourage joined up handwriting and will practise the main letter formations.
Mathematics
As part of our number work, children will be encouraged to look at the four basic rules of calculation, and will be using these to solve simple word problems. We will introduce division and relate this to work on multiplication and times tables. We will also revise mental calculation strategies; to include number bonds, doubles and halves, and place value. Children will use money in an every day context to calculate totals and find change from a given amount. In measure, shape and space, children will have opportunities to explore elements of mathematics in an every day context. Our topics will include capacity, mass and revision of 2D and 3D shape.
Science
This term we explore plants and animals in their local habitats and begin to think about variation. The children will have opportunities to investigate the plants and animals found in their local environments and explore some habitats in detail. They will compare, sort and classify plants and animals according to their features and use scientific vocabulary to name and label parts of a flowering plant. We will grow our own plants and carry out investigations into what plants need to grow and stay alive. This topic will link closely to our humanities work, where we will think about seaside animal and plant life.
History
Our topic for the Summer term is The Seaside. In history the children will compare seaside holiday destinations from the past with those that we visit today and look at how people would travel to the seaside. They will also look at the similarities and differences between the clothes that people wore and the activities that they would participate in.
Geography
In geography the children will look at the location of seaside destinations on maps and compare those that they may have visited themselves. They will have opportunities to use secondary sources to distinguish between human and physical features. They will also think about the similarities and differences of a seaside town to that of their local environment.
Religious Education
This term we will be following on work about the Easter festival and The Holy Spirit giving energy to spread the Easter message. In relation to this the children will think about where we get energy from and how it is used. We will also explore the rules in the Christian family and how we follow rules at home, school and in our neighbourhood. We will think about special places for Christians and also places that may be special to the children and how they can make you feel.
French
We will be looking at the house and its structure, animals they might find in a zoo and vocabulary relating to the seaside. The lessons will be very practical with the children using a variety of games, songs and mimes to help them learn the new vocabulary.
ICT
This term Year 2 will be exploring the features of a word processing package, and using this to create their own meaningful stories, poems and lists. They will learn how to enter text, make corrections and punctuate their sentences using keyboard techniques. In the latter half of the term, they will be using simple graphs and databases to collect, store, present and interpret information. They will be encouraged to ask simple questions and select a suitable database to record answers.
Personal, Social, Health and Moral Education
In circle time and RE sessions we will continue to focus on listening to and sharing our ideas with others. The children will have opportunities to think about respecting and celebrating differences between friends and the importance of friendships. The children will have opportunities to reflect on their behaviour and that of their peers and how to consider other people's feelings.
Music
The term will begin with some lively lessons in which the children will develop their composition skills through working in groups to compose a piece of music entitled The Musical Merry-Go-Round. They will revisit some favourite songs such as Mr Macgrew and learn some exciting new ones such as The Sports Day Song, Hairy Scary Castle, Sally go Round the Sun and Zudio in which they will sing and dance.
Art and Design
In art this term, the children will be exploring shape, line, pattern and texture through our topic on the seaside. They will be using a range of media and techniques to design their own pictures, paintings and collages. In Design Technology, we will be using the storybook "The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch", as a basis for our investigations. Children will be encouraged to design and make their own simple models and mechanisms, whilst developing their ability to handle tools and work independently.
Drama
The children will explore a range of genres and have opportunities to devise, practice and perform simple stories based on familiar texts studied in class, such as fairy tales and traditional stories. Children will use hot seating, collective role-play and mime to explore the role and feelings of characters in these types of texts. The children will be encouraged to work co-operatively as part of a group and to use their own ideas to create simple role-plays.
Physical Education
We will concentrate on basic athletic skills, primarily looking at the development of arm positioning and running on the balls of the feet. The children will focus on running in a ‘channel' and minimizing head movement by looking down the channel. Basic invasion games will incorporate these skills. Year 2 will also practise ball throwing skills, concentrating on body position, wrist action and release timing. In addition to throwing, hand-eye coordination will be developed through the introduction of Kwik cricket.
It is emphasised that the above is offered as a guide only, and the school retains the flexibility to adapt its schemes of work to the needs of the individual or the class.
