Year 1 - Summer 07

English

This term, pupils will be continuing to develop their phonic awareness through our sound of the week, spelling test, school reading books, library books, homework, and various pieces of work enabling them to put into practice what they have learnt. They will also continue to build on previous terms' work, involving writing sentences that make sense, using capital letters and full stops and developing the skills needed for story writing. It is important to establish the rules of grammar and we continue to highlight verbs and nouns in reading and in written work. Introduced this term are: plurals, speech marks and question marks, and we use a variety of exercises to develop their ability to use alphabetical order and begin to use a simple dictionary. We also continue to place great importance on developing correct letter formation with entry and exit flicks ready for joined up handwriting. We will focus on factual writing this term, thinking about how we can select the important facts from a text. We will make a non-fiction book, write a plan, find out how to use the contents page, and look at information books and writing questions. Finally, we continue to develop comprehension skills through whole class lessons and individual pieces of work.

Mathematics

We continue our work on time, encouraging pupils to look at the clock throughout the day. We will look at digital clocks and pupils will be encouraged to record their answers for o'clock and half past times. We will revise work done in previous terms on reading, writing and ordering numbers to 20. This term, when ready, pupils will continue this work with numbers to 100. They will be using numbers to 20 and beyond. Later in the term we are looking at place value, number patterns to 100 and odd and even numbers. Revision of money, values of coins and giving and receiving change with 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, and this term we introduce 50p. As it is the summer term, we will have fun with water through our work on capacity. We revise the properties of 2D and 3D shapes and look at octagons and pentagons. Pupils will also be involved in data handling exercises, collecting data and recording information on a graph, this links with work we will be doing in humanities and in ICT. As individual's understanding develops they will work on different activities, allowing them to use the mathematical skills gained on addition and subtraction exercises to 10 and to 20. All pupils will be encouraged to work on many practical games and puzzles to encourage them to solve problems in a variety of ways.

Science

Light and Dark is the topic for the first half term, we will think about the experiences of night time and pupils will be encouraged to look at non-fiction books to find out about the stars and the moon. We will also think about light and how essential it is. Through looking at books and doing some experiments pupils will become more aware of the many sources of light and how they show up at night time. Finally, we hope for some sunny days to think about the Sun as a source of light and how shadows are formed. We look at forces, pushes and pulls for the second half term. Pupils will be encouraged to observe and describe different ways of moving, making objects move, and what causes movement. There are links this term with our work on capacity in maths and transport in humanities, and also ICT when we look at how devices can be controlled by a sequence of physical actions.

Humanities

The first half term pupils will be developing their geographical skills, asking questions about the world around them and thinking of ways of improving their environment. We will look at the road near our school and pupils will record information on tally charts, including type and colour of vehicle. We will discuss frequency of traffic and find ways of making our tally charts easier to understand by making graphs. We will also revise some of the work we did earlier in the year by looking at maps; pupils will be encouraged to find the flag of a particular country and where that country is located on the map. During the second half of this term we change our focus to history, thinking about how transport has changed and the different types of transport used. Pupils will be encouraged to use information books and also look at old photographs, models, and toys to find evidence of what cars, boats and planes were made of and how they have changed. We will also talk about landing on the moon.

Religious Education

We have several topics this term which will examine different aspects of religion and life around us. Our first topic looks at energy. The children will explore the importance and joy of having and using energy. They will learn about the Holy Spirit giving the important gift of energy and joy to the friends of Jesus at Pentecost. Our second topic explores rules within our school and how these make for happiness in ourselves and others. We will reflect on how following God's way leads to happiness and freedom. In the summer term we will have the opportunity to look at Hinduism. We will look briefly at the importance of the home for Hindus. We will also discuss some of their sacred symbols and their holy place of worship, the temple. Finally we will examine special places. In Year 1 we will share different places in the school that are special to different people for different reasons. We will also spend time learning about the chapel as a place in school that is special for everyone as a place of prayer and collective worship.

French

We will be looking at animals they might find on a farm, members of their immediate family and clothes they wear. The lessons will be very practical with the children using a variety of games and activities to help them learn the new vocabulary.

ICT

This is taught as a subject in its own right and also takes place in other areas of the curriculum. This term, pupils will learn that data can be collected and presented as a pictogram which is easier to understand. That ICT can be used to classify and present findings. This links well with the data handling in maths and our traffic surveys in geography. The second half of the term pupils will focus on understanding instructions and making things happen. They will look at how machines and devises can be controlled by a series of actions and use directional language to control actions. Record a sequence of movements in common format, and simple computer robot instructions will be introduced. This work links in well with our science topic of pushes and pulls and transport in history. Various games are also used, chosen specifically to enhance children's learning, allowing them to practise skills they have acquired, and build confidence; enabling them to demonstrate what they know in other contexts.

Personal, Social, Health and Moral Education

In PSHME we develop children's ability to experience their own individuality and find ways to value others. This term we will encourage children to think of ways to be a good friend, to understand the importance of being kind and to respect and celebrate differences in each other.

Music

The children will embark on an exciting journey with Mandy and her Magic Butterfly and will hear amongst others, The Flight of the Bumble Bee and the Humming Chorus from Madame Butterfly. The children will learn new songs and have the opportunity to accompany them with percussion instruments, for example The Music Man and The Ride of the Delhi Tongawallah. After listening to the atmospheric music Muminxenge (Chinese), they will create their own sound collages.

Art and Design

In DT this term, the children will be designing and making their own moving pictures using simple levers and sliding mechanisms. They will be encouraged to develop their cutting and joining skills, in order to work independently when assembling their designs. In art, the children will be encouraged to explore different materials and their properties. They will use a range of techniques to create textured pictures, collages and models based on our topic of the natural world.

Drama

During the summer term the children in Year 1 will be working in various ways to build on their ability to interact positively with one another. We will play various partner games where they will learn to cooperate and interact. We will also be developing their speaking and listening skills through music and mime.

Physical Education

We will concentrate on basic athletic skills, primarily looking at the development of arm positioning and running on the balls of the feet. The children will focus on running in a ‘channel' and minimizing head movement by looking down the channel. Basic invasion games will incorporate these skills.

It is emphasised that the above is offered as a guide only, and the school retains the flexibility to adapt its schemes of work to the needs of the individual or the class.
