Reception - Summer 07

The topics for this term will be Clothes and Water in Reception. In all subjects children will be aiming to reach standards beyond those expected by the end of the Reception year. We will be spending more time outside as the sunny weather continues, enabling children to explore and develop their awareness of the environment.

Personal, social and emotional development

The children will be continuing to reinforce their social skills and expected standards of behaviour within the school environment. They will reflect on their awareness of others peoples' needs and feelings. The children will be learning about other cultures' attitudes and beliefs, including the Romans and Neptune. In addition we will also be thinking about the effects of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami.

Communication, language and literacy

This term we will be consolidating and extending the knowledge that the children have acquired over the past two terms. All children will be encouraged to write their news and creative writing independently using simple punctuation and sounds that we have covered. They will be encouraged to think about their handwriting, including letter orientation, and use greater control and co-ordination.

Mathematical development

This term we will be introducing children to time and further developing their knowledge of money. The children will reinforce and extend their number awareness and begin to recognise and solve formal addition and subtraction problems, both separately and in conjunction with each other.

Knowledge and understanding of the world

During the first half term the children will be looking at the playground and thinking about how they would like to change it, by introducing a sensory garden. They will be comparing clothes from different periods of time and cultures, and which materials are needed to keep warm or cool. After half term we will be looking at the importance and effect that water has on the environment, experimenting with water and thinking about water and religion.

Physical development

The children will be further developing their imagination and creativity through studying music and dance. They will be learning about the importance of exercise and the effects that it has on your body, in preparation for sports day.

Creative development

In the first few weeks the children will be designing and making dolls clothes. We will look at patterns and how cloth is made and try weaving and printing patterns.

After the holidays the children will experiment with a range of media. They will paint and print with fish, and make rock pools. We will look at Monet's paintings of water lilies and recreate elements of his pictures.

Music

The children will build upon and further develop their listening, performing and composing skills. They will enjoy playing a variety of musical games with percussion instruments and voices. They will be encouraged to make their own sound shakers to add to our ‘Magical Musical Box' to use in our own musical interpretation of Cinderella. New songs will include a selection from A Journey to the Seaside and many other favourites.

It is emphasised that the above is offered as a guide only, and the school retains the flexibility to adapt its schemes of work to the needs of the individual or the class.
