Year 5 went on a walk to Alton High Street. There were five groups, each one with a teacher and we got into pairs with the people in our group.

Once we got there, we dropped off a group at a time until we were scattered around the High Street in our groups. Each pair got a clip board with tally charts and questionnaires on it. We counted what type of vehicles we saw in five minutes ad were very surprised by how many bikes there were. We also interviews young men and women from Alton College and got some interesting answers from them about the traffic and how it is controlled in the area. We looked at that as well.

Children in Years 1 and 2 revelled in the space and freedom provided by West Wittering which provided the perfect setting for a wonderful art and dance experience inspired by artist and teacher Mrs Ashley Brian and dance and drama teacher Mrs Hillier. Collecting stones of different colours, shells, seaweed and driftwood to create a collage on the beach, fascinated the children and they began to understand for themselves what has inspired artists like Goldsworthy. Stones with sparkly centres, some smooth and worn with holes in the middle, became precious treasures and brought home the amazing diversity of natural objects. Shape, colour and texture were brought to life as the collage took shape. As the clouds thinned and the sun shone, many questions were raised by the dramatically changing seascape.’ Why is the sea so blue now’? Why is it so sparkly’? ‘How does the tide go out’?

The U9 team had quite a deal of experience of this competition as they played last year and came 8th. Sadly plagued by illnes Alton lost their form player and striker for this tournament and had no suitable replacement. Yet despite this the boys took their first game by the scruff of the neck a won it with a goal by James L. Seven games to go the boys kept going and did not show any flagging; their fitness levels was excellent. They lacked cohesiveness and confidence against bigger and more skillful teams but they never gave up. The final results that the team came 5th with one win and three draws (in two games they hit the post...

The U16s had an equally promising first game even though they did not have their full team out. Again confidence showed and with the excellent shooting of Anya and Laura they won 26 - 19. Player of the match - Anya.

On Monday 29th September, Year 3 went to Fisbourne Palace in Chichester. We saw a model of the palace before it burnt down. It had four wings but only the east wing is left today. We went into one of the rooms where we could write our names in roman writing.
Some of my class made mosaics in a frame of sand. I saw a model of the gardener who told us how hard it was in the olden days. His face scared me!
After we had a picnic lunch, we went to the shop and I bought a red, twirly, whirly cup and a dolphin necklace.
After the visit we went back to school on the minibus. It was a great day!

Alton 1 Ditcham 0

It is always an adventure travelling up to Ditcham Park School and this was no exception. The team were missing a couple of key players due to illness, injury and county commitments. The game turned out to be very one-sided with Alton on the attack for the majority of the game I lowever many near chances came and went and at half-time the score was still 0-0 . Second half started well and within no time Alton had scored, much to the relief of the whole team. An excellent performance and the man of the man was Harry.

On Tuesday 30th September the 5th Year travelled to St Lucy's Convent in Medstead for a day's retreat and reflexion. Although the day was wet and cold and we did not get chance to walk around the stunning gardens at St Lucy's, this did not end our activities, we found plenty to do!

We started the day with a few simple activities to get ourselves warmed up, these included arranging ourselves in birthday order and in height order symmetrically, with the tallest in the middle, all without talking! We coped surprisingly well and got ready for the rest of the day. We took a quiz about the facts of water in the world, moving about to different parts of the room to show our answers. We were thrown in to the deep end, but the answers to the questions really sunk in, for instance we learnt that the amount of water used in one toilet flush in the UK is the equivalent to how much water, on average, a single person in Gambia uses in one day. We were then put into groups and given a pack which contained information about aspects of water, such as facts and real-life stories; we then created a presentation to display the facts and stories which we found. This helped us to share information and resulted in news stories, role plays and raps!

On Wednesday the 25th of October the 5th form of Alton Convent School went on their last residential trip to Stratford upon Avon, the home of William Shakespeare. After filling the minibuses with our (what were suppose to be) small luggage's, we started our journey there, all very keen to make the most of our last trip together. We all settled into our rooms at the youth hostel and immediately got on with our first activity of the trip. This was a drama - based lesson which included gradual understanding of how to create a better performance, use of imagination and improvisations. Though many of us did not take Drama GCSE as a subject and were not too keen on acting, each of us enjoyed the lessons and took something new home with us. Our instructor made the workshop extremely entertaining and I was particularly surprised at the great boost in confidence it gave those who did not seem so eager to act at the beginning. It did not matter your level in drama, everyone got involved and could do it. After our two sessions, we finished the day with free time, unpacking our bags, all impatient and eager on finding out what these few days were to bring us.

U13s - Their first game of what is going to be a very busy season for this quality team. They are entered in the Aldershot League for the first time. This was just a friendly fixture but bode well for this year. They played with superb ball control and movement and had a very easy win of 17 - 8. Player of the match - Rebecca.
U15s - This team met a very strong side. Their confidence was not as high as last week and this showed in their performance. FHS dominated throughout and Alton just could not get going. A loss of 5 - 18. Player of the match - Jessica.

Year 5 went to Intech's planetarium. First we spent some time exploring Intech for ourselves; we went on all sorts of fun things. My favourite one was the system for moving grain around: there were four things that you had to turn to make the grain go round the whole system.
At 11:30 it was time to go into the planetarium. When we went in, we were surprised to see that it was like a cinema. We sat down in the most comfortable seats and watched the show. It was funny because when the start exploded it made a big, loud bang, but in space you wouldn't hear it because there's no atmosphere. I found it very interesting.

U14s - A very depleted teamput out by Alton due to a number of injuries and illnesses within their usual team. This was tough for them against a fair St nics side. Even so, they worked hard to form new relationships and routines and a score line of 6 - 16  to St Nics does not do the game justice. Player of the match - Hannah.
U15s - another bad game for this team who after their first win are struggling to find form in the centre of the court. A dominant oppostition left a loss of 11 - 33. Player of the match - Jessica.

Alton Convent's lower sixth form have recently returned from their annual team-building and leadership trip to Tregoyd House in the Brecon Beacons. Activities such as kayaking, raft-building, archery and hide and seek in the dark, helped the students and their counterparts from Salesian College to overcome fears, learn skills and most importantly how to work effectively within a team. Exhausted but happy the girls returned from Wales with new skills, new confidence and new friendships.

The weekend signalled the start of a close relationship with Salesian College as the students continue to prepare for their joint pilgrimage to Lourdes next Easter with the Handicapped Children’s Pilgrimage Trust.

The Harvest Festival was on Tuesday the 14th of October. It was great! There was loads of produce from everyone which included cakes, bread, fruit, vegetables and lots more, and it was a great success. The orchestra played and the Chanteurs sang the Clare Benediction. With Year 4’s drama and the talks from Mr Maher and Mrs Bird it was great and very tasty! The Marian Hall looked brilliant with all the harvest art work on display.
In the afternoon there was even more fun! We had a little harvest sale and Year 6 got to sell the things. We raised lots of money for CAFOD thanks to everyone’s generosity.

Nursery and Pre-Prep had a wonderful day celebrating Harvest this year. We started the day joining the Prep School in celebrating at the Harvest service. The children delighted in seeing all the produce displayed and watching the older children perform. The highlight of our day was welcoming many of the parents to our informal Harvest lunch. There were 30 children & approximately 25 parents and siblings celebrating together and it proved to be a delightful occasion. We had perfect weather, enabling us to all share lunch together with the children on the decking. The children behaved beautifully and really enjoyed their extra special lunch consisting of a Ploughman’s, home made cakes and apples from the Sisters’ garden. Thank you for taking time to share in our special day.

U14s - What a game! Awesome play by both teams left it neck and neck throughout. Both teams were scoring off their centres and keeping good possession. Alton managed to get that one break to win 8 - 7 even though their centre,Rachel Hyndman is off with injury - a good result. Player of the match - Hannah.
U16s - again a nail biting game. Alton were down by 2 goals at half time with the centre passes not working in our favour. Luckily, in the last ten minutes Anya found some great shooting form and we overcame the disadvantage to win in the last 30 seconds 25 - 24. Player of the match -

On the 15th October the second form visited St Lucy's Convent in Medstead on retreat. The theme for the day was "trading trainers" reflecting on how hard the peoples' lives are who make our trainers.

The weather was not on our side but this did not stop many of the activities that were planned for the day going ahead although it did mean that we could not enjoy the wonderful gardens at the Convent.

We started off the day with a few games to waken us up, such as: getting into groups of a given amount of people without being left out, and ordering ourselves into height order without speaking.

Kingscourt have emerged as the "dark horse" of the Wessex League this year. We knew we could underestimate them. Well, all I can say is that they have been the most complete team we have played. In the first we have to admit Alton were asleep and they had scored 5 goals before half time. And they were well worked goals. Jack did a stirling restricting the scoreline. Josh R gave some respectability with a consolation goal, however it was a nightmare start.
It was a story of two halves as Alton started playing the football they are capable of with stout defending from Francesca and Josh P. Josh R increasing his workrate and seemed to be everywhere.

The ISA Regional Swimming Championships were held at the Garrison Olympic Training Centre on Thursday 16th October. ACS sent of a team of very excited and nervous girls. Most had never experienced such a venue before and I have to admit many of us would feel as daunted as they did. The girls were magnificent both in the pool as well as out.We did not have any fantastic results however you could never tell due the noise they made when each girl finished their race. Tiana Francis gained a creditable 3rd in the Yr 5 backstroke as compared to 6th last year. Lottie Fellows won her heat in Yr 5 freestyle and we await to see if her time is good enough to get into the Nationals. The yr 6 girls worked hard in their races and a special mention needs to be to said about Grace Jenner who stepped up to swim the butterfly leg of the medley relay despite it being her weakest stroke. The ACS team were a credit to both Mrs Cowle and myself and to the parents who sat through 5hrs of races, well done all!
Just a footnote to say that Alton Convent is not a swimming school (far more recognised for our x-country and athletics) as compared to the majority of the 19 schools competing, however we do participate and compete. This area of sport is a work in progress and it takes time and careful thought and planning to become better. In the mean time I am very proud of the swimm team and their efforts this year.

On Thursday 16th October all Prep school pupils and staff danced their way around the new drama studio led by visiting theatre group HotBuckle Productions. Years 1,2 and 3 watched exciting performances of The Gruffalo and The Emperors New Clothes and also explored their own imagined worlds through some interactive storytelling. The children’s own ideas for a play were brought to life as the three actors from HotBuckle improvised their way through the children’s stories about a kidnapped prince and a two legged pig!

Well the day had arrived - thier first league match. You could feel the nerves jangling at the start, both teams were so quiet!!! The following report was written by Amy, their captain.
We started off really well scoring 6 goals in the first quarter while Mill chase only scored 1. At the start of the second quarter play went a bit scrappy and Mill chase scored another goal but we sonn regained control and scored 6 more goals. At half time the score was 12 - 2 to Alton.
At the start of the third quarter we instantly scored anothr goal that was closely followed by 3 others! During the final quarter Sarah and Erin really proved themselves by scoring 4 more goals to leave thscore with a promising win of 20 - 2.

Today the early years department made the most of the Autumn sunshine and joined together for an afternoon of creativity and fun based around the theme of colours. Children from each of the three classes were encouraged to participate in a range of activities that enabled them to explore different colours and their properties, whilst investigating the effects of colour mixing. The children particularly enjoyed the outdoor activities which included welly boot painting and bottle swinging, whilst opportunities to do marble painting, make a colour wheel spinner and explore light and colour on the OHP were firm favourites amongst the indoor activities.

U12A - This was both teams first match since their new teams were formed. The A team started with a great deal of nervousness. They initially went 4 - 0 down! At last they started to show the talent they had in team practices and managed to get it back to finish a 6 - 6 draw. Player of the match - Tabetha and Harriet
U12B - This team started with more confidence which lasted throughout the game. Dunhurst piled on the pressure but Alton were not to be outplayed. Final result a 6 - 5 win for Alton. Player of the match Aislinn and Georgia

Upper Prep children enjoyed some exciting art and design technology workshops on Thursday, when an inventor came to share his expertise with many of our pupils. The theme for the day was working mechanisms and models, and each class learnt about different ways of making things move or come to life. Year 4 explored designing and making through electricity, and were very proud when they got the opportunity to make their own working torches. Year 5 investigated moving toys from the past, before using levers and cams to make their own snapping crocodile toys.

The music department closed the first half term with a concert of chamber music featuring AS and GCSE pupils as well as music scholars. Parents and staff enjoyed a varied programme with music spanning four centuries on a variety of instruments. Sarah impressed with a performance of her own composition for piano and we look forward to hearing more from Les Six – a newly formed vocal group who gave a beautiful rendition of ‘The Long and Winding Road’.

Although the weather was not promising in the morning,  the school was on fire with anticipation for the House football Gala in the afternoon. There were two pools with each House having 2 teams consisting of all of Yr 6 and guests from Yr 5.

In the pool matches there were some glimpses of scintillating stuff on the pitches with some of the girls showing up the boys. One pool match had to go to golden goal between Augustine Cherries and Paul's Bananas. Excellent and brave goal keeping by Katya kept the Cherries at bay. However some excellent lead up work Rebecca and Zoe saw Josh slot the goal that mattered. In the other pool Natalia and Rebecca H of the Chantal Marshes kept all other teams at bay to reach the final; and what a final it was.
