Pastoral Care
“Don’t walk in front of me; I may not follow. Don’t walk behind me; I may not lead. Just walk beside me and be my friend.”
Albert Camus
Pastoral Care at Alton Convent School is outstanding, and one of our great strengths. Teachers know each pupil individually, care greatly about each, listen to every child, treat them gently and nurture them. Our young people are secure and know there is always someone they can turn to – the security that is the foundation of academic success.
Pupils care for and accept each other. They are very tolerant, and if there is even a hint of bullying it is dealt with immediately. There is no pressure on girls to grow up too quickly. Our prefect and mentoring system allows older students and Sixth Formers to support younger children and encourages responsibility.
‘This is one big family and we support each other.’
A Senior pupil
‘If you have a problem, the teachers get alongside.’
A Prep pupil
‘What I love about the school is the pastoral care. It’s just fantastic.’
A teacher
Teachers know the importance of their role in their pupils’ moral and ethical development and help them to understand how they can make the world a better place. It is part of what makes us one of the best schools in Hampshire.
Pupils can air their views through the School Council in the Senior School, with several of their ideas implemented each year to enrich school life. Upper Prep pupils can do the same at House Meetings.
